"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect." IBO Mission Statement
The IB Diploma Programme is an international pre-university programme taught in more than 148 countries worldwide. This program is celebrating 50 years of excellence in 2018.The quality of the programme is guaranteed by an independent IB organization with its Head Office in Switzerland and its new global centre in The Hague. Our language of instruction is English. Many of the teachers in the IB Diploma Programme at Katedralskolan are native English speakers.
The first year is a preparatory year, during which courses are taken in most subjects offered in the Diploma Programme. During the two years of the Diploma Programme, six subjects are studied, chosen from the six groups: three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. This creates a balance between the natural sciences, the humanities, and the arts.
There are three additional requirements, which are unique to the IB
- Theory of Knowledge – a transdisciplinary course which encourages critical and creative reflection on knowledge issues arising in the other subjects,
- Extended Essay – a 4 000 word in-depth research paper on a topic inspired by one of the six subjects and which prepares students for university-level assignments.
- CAS (creativity-activity-service) – an opportunity for personal development through Experiences such as sports, creative skills, and service to the community, both at home and in the world.
